Ducting Evaluation.

Preface

Ductair flexible ductwork was selected for a recent experimental geothermal and acquathermal  research installation.

This research is being supported by Robert Bosch and Melbourne University, as little analysis has been done in testing these systems under Australian conditions. Live performance data will continuously be presented on the WEB. This performance information will be available to all interested parties.  It will also assist future designs of what are very popular installations overseas, to ensure the most efficient design for Australian conditions.

AIM:

The aim of the work is to prove the viability of extracting heat from the ground or from water ways in winter and to likewise expel unwanted heat in the summer. 

Goal: 

As efficiency and therefore low running cost is the goal in this environment of energy costs doubling every few years, careful consideration was given to the selection of the air ducting.  Poor ducting material is a source of great energy loss.  Also, the installation was purposely done in a typical rural house, which is generally not designed for HVAC systems, increasing the chance of duct damage during installation when pulled into place. 

Main Points of distinction: The Ductair ducting has the proved to have the following advantages:

True  R1.5 insulation characteristics.

Very tough silvered outer plastic skin to greatly reduce ripping which often goes unrepaired if cheap flexible ducting is used.

If punctured, this ducting does not continue to split like other brands; therefore greatly reducing energy loses into the future even if inadvertently left unrepaired.

Larger gauge helical inner support wire.

High resistance to collapse.

Can be handled roughly in tight positions without sustaining damage.

Will not collapse even in tight turns and needs little additional external support, decreasing the number of tape support points.

Has consistent sizing for easy joining to fittings in difficult spots with tight access.

Can be pulled through bulkheads or rodent barricades without tearing even if snagged accidentally.

If snagged, the rough outer texture makes a grating sound which quickly alerts the installer to the problem.

Can be used in vertical installations without any stretching and sagging problems.

Ductair ducting has proved to have very good noise attenuation.

Summary:

The best recommendation came from the installers when one additional length of a different brand of ducting was needed quickly and sourced from the nearest supplier.  Both installers remarked how much better the Ductair product was, and how the obvious quality difference lowered their confidence in using the substitute product which markedly slowed down the installation.
